Roadmap · v0.1.4

Roadmap

What is implemented and what is only planned. No release dates are promised.

Planned means not shipped. The latest release is v0.1.4. Implemented items are in the repository; see the release notes for what each build contains. Order and scope may change.

Implemented

  • ImplementedCore. Image classification and strategy planning; safe removable-drive discovery on Linux; raw writing with SHA-256 read-back verification; Windows GPT/FAT32 media with split-WIM support.
  • ImplementedInterfaces. Terminal UI and desktop GUI for inspection, planning, and writing, with matching features in both.
  • ImplementedPrivilege model. Linux polkit helper with a narrow JSON protocol; macOS administrator prompt with a fixed root-owned helper; Windows UAC prompt with a fixed protected helper; cancellation at safe boundaries.
  • ImplementedNative adapters. Windows USB-only and macOS whole-removable discovery, stable-ID revalidation, unmounting, and raw write/verify; native Windows FAT32 and macOS GPT/MBR FAT32 Windows media with boot-tree verification.
  • ImplementedImages and downloads. Streaming XZ, gzip, Zstandard, and bzip2 images; downloads with publisher checksum sidecar/manifest verification and truthful fallback states.
  • ImplementedWindows setup options. Hardware-requirement bypass, account, region, privacy, BitLocker, quality-of-life policies, CA 2023 bootloaders, SkuSiPolicy, and S Mode.
  • ImplementedTesting. Loop-device write tests, an OVMF/QEMU boot assertion, and a production writer to virtual USB to QEMU end-to-end test.
  • ImplementedDisk tools. Bad-block and fake-capacity tests on Linux; raw IMG/RAW/DD backup.

Planned

  • PlannedSigned releases. Signed release artifacts, platform code signing, and macOS notarization. Releases are unsigned today.
  • PlannedHotplug. udev-driven hotplug refresh on Linux. Drive lists refresh once per second today.
  • PlannedLegacy BIOS. BIOS compatibility helpers when an image cannot boot via UEFI. Partition-scheme and firmware choices are partial: UEFI only.
  • PlannedFormatting. General FAT, NTFS, UDF, exFAT, and ext formatting. Only Windows-media FAT32 exists today.
  • PlannedLinux persistence. Not implemented.
  • PlannedMultiboot. Persistent multi-boot media as a separate, explicit strategy. Not implemented.
  • PlannedWindows To Go. Not implemented.
  • PlannedDOS and FreeDOS media. Not implemented.
  • PlannedMore backup formats. VHD, VHDX, and FFU. Only raw IMG/RAW/DD backup exists.
  • PlannedSignature verification. OpenPGP and minisign verification where publishers provide signatures. Checksum verification is implemented.
  • PlannedOfficial downloads. Official ISO and UEFI Shell downloads. Not implemented.
  • PlannedLocalization. Not implemented.

Intended order

This is the current plan, not a schedule:

  1. Formatting and in-app UEFI validation.
  2. Windows To Go.
  3. Linux persistence, BIOS helpers, and DOS media.
  4. VHD/VHDX/FFU backup, signature-verified downloads, and localization.
  5. Signed platform installers.

Every capability lands in the core first. The desktop and terminal interfaces ship each feature together.

Deliberately unavailable

Silent unattended Windows installation is not offered. It would need a separate, high-friction target-disk safety design.
